MHL Technology-Explained!

MHL or Mobile High Definition video Link

is a connector found on high endsmartphones such as the
Samsung Galaxy S II and the
HTC EVO 3D. But What is
exactly the MHL connector?

Little bit of history:
This new connector was
introduced back in 2008 by
Silicon Image and was
demonstrated during the
Consumer Electronic Show
(CES). A consortium of
partners that includes Nokia,
Samsung, Sony and Toshiba
was created in April 2010.

What is exactly a MHL
connector then?

MHL port looks very much
like a compact microUSB
connector. It has a 5pin port
capable of HD video output of
1080p and 7.1-channel audio
output to an HDTV.
When connected to an HDTV
via the MHL port, the device
can be supplied by power, therefore not only your phone
won’t run out of battery in
the middle of a movie but it
will also charge the phone.
Another nifty feature, if you
own a MHL enabled TV, is
the ability to browse through
your media files on your
phone with the TV’s remote
control.

Why it’s shaped like a
microUSB port?

Well that’s because it can
also be used as a microUSB
port. When plugged with an
USB cable, the device will
recognize the wiring and act
like a microUSB port.

Which devices are equipped
with MHL port?

Samsung Galaxy S II
Samsung Infuse 4G
HTC Flyer
HTC Sensation
HTC EVO 3D
Samsung Galaxy S4
… more to come

What’s the future for it?
Due to its slim size and back
compatibility with microUSB,
but also the support from
heavy weight consumer
electronic manufacturers, the
MHL is assured to be the
next generation of connector.
The MHL consortium is also
working on the next
generation, which will be able
to transmit 3D content from
your mobile devices to your
3D HDTV.
So now that you know more
about the MHL connector,
will you be looking for one on
your next gadget purchase?
