Smartphones today come with a multitude of great features that can truly enhance your online life. One of the best features — and sometimes the most costly — is called tethering. Tethering is one of the most useful features of an iPhone or Android device, allowing you to connect devices like your laptop or tablet to the internet through your smartphone.
So here is an attempt to explain you what exactly tethering means and how you set it up! Hope you like it!

Simply put, tethering allows you to share the internet connection of one device with other devices. Most modern Android devices, along with the iPhone and iPad (3G or 4G versions), allow you to connect several devices at once.
Tethering can be used over USB, bluetooth, or wifi. For instance, if you have a wifi-only iPad and a 4G Android smartphone, you can share your phone’s 4G connection with your iPad, letting you connect it to the internet even when you don’t have wifi access.
Prerequisites
In order to successfully tether a
cellphone to a computer, users
must first ensure they are using
a mobile device that is capable of
doing so. A quick call to your
wireless service provider can
confirm if your phone has this
capability. Additionally, users
will need a data plan that
supports tethering functionality.
Contact your service provider to
inquire which plan or additional
feature you will need to
successfully tether your phone.
The customer service
representative can assist you
with making the necessary
changes to your service.
Cost Concerns
Tethering functionality oftenincurs extra charges due to the
additional strain it places on the
wireless network being utilized.
Thankfully, because tethering
functionality counts as an
additional feature rather than a
contractual service, users are not
obligated to retain the feature
month-to-month and may add or
remove it as needed. This means
users will be prorated to pay
only for the time the feature is
active on the account.
Data Restrictions
Data access when tethering isnormally restricted to no more
than 5 GB of usage per month.
While accessing email and
browsing the web on your
cellphone may never bring you
close to this limit normally,
utilizing your Internet
connection with a computer can
definitely do so. Especially if a
user is utilizing the Internet for
work purposes, large attachments
and media files can quickly chew
through the allotted bandwidth
if you are not careful. It should
also be noted that if you only
plan to use the tethering service
for a partial month, the
bandwidth may be similarly
prorated. Ask your service
provider about this beforehand
to avoid a nasty surprise on your
next bill.
